Forty years young

29th Oct 2009

On October 29th 1969 computers sending data between two Californian universities were to spark the beginning of the worldwide phenomenon known today as the Internet. Although only two typed letters were sent – as the message then crashed the system – it was the first time a message had been sent between two computers via a phone line. This was to become one of the most important breakthroughs in computer technology this century. Just forty years later and the world depends on the connections and communication made possible by the discovery. Everything from banking to ordering Christmas shopping is done online, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Business run the world and shape economies online. The end of the Internet now would be the end of the world as we know it.

Despite this reality, the fact is that the Internet has opened doors to information that forty years ago would have remained shut. Instant access to the almost unending expanse of thoughts, musings, opinions, facts and knowledge can be somewhat daunting, yet definitely consuming and addictive. The impact of the Internet can’t really be explained, if you cannot understand the effects then you probably haven’t been living in the same reality as the rest of us.

In this age of breakneck communication speeds and instant access to all the information you could possibly want, where else will the Internet go? The developments being made in to third world countries is a major step and from then onto more sites, more information and higher speeds.

Thanks to the work of the original scientists involved in that first communication our world is more open, more accessible and a hell of a lot faster. Is that a good thing? Well, that could be debated well into the next century.

At Creation Agency we know the power of the Internet, and our Digital Marketing Teams can help harness that power for your business. Find out more by clicking here
