Christmas 2010 Sales Bonanza!
3rd Nov 2010
Total Retail sales during Christmas 2010 are expected to grow by £1.6
billion compared to Christmas 2009 according to latest figures published
by Verdict Research.Online retail will benefit most as shoppers choose the benefits of multichannel flexibility, choice and convenience, the analyst said. Figures show online will take more than three quarters of the extra spending with growth of £1.2 billion on last year, accounting for 9.5% of all sales.
Non-food sales online will contribute most to the increase, growing at 17.8% compared with 0.8% for total non-food. Verdict Lead Retail Analyst Maureen Hinton said the switch to online means “retailers without transactional websites are missing out at a crucial period for the sector”.
Despite being boosted by iPad sales and new videogame accessories, which make popular gifts, sales of high-ticket electrical items in white and grey goods will continue to decline, Verdict said. Smartphones, tablets and Kindles will be popular at the expense of previous festive favourites such as iPods and portable media players.
Televisions, with maturity now beginning to set in, will struggle to match the tough comparatives from 2009 resulting in strong price deflation (-7.1%), Verdict said.
