Question of the Week: Cloud Computing. What's in a name?

Last week HP and IBM finally agreed on something, that Cloud computing was a ridiculous name.

What do you think? Does 'Cloud' computing instil confidence in you or would something stronger sounding have more of a positive effect on the idea?

  1. I like it, it's emotive. From a design point of view, it's nice to have something visual to work with and not try and stretch concepts from terms like 'Virtulisation'.

  2. I think the problem is that cloud computing has come to represent so many different things that the average customer has got confused. The term itself is quite vague so a clearer definition would help. If they change it now a lot of design agencies (including us) will have to go back to the drawing board!

  3. The French don't have a word for Cloud Computing. It's becoming difficult for the French language to keep up with the pace of technology. Apparently it takes 18 months for a term to be translated by the committee. By which time technology would have evolved further.
