What is it with all these kids coming out of university using InDesign? Why do they want to make me and my department use it? The idea to me is disgusting, it’s cheating and capitulating, it shows no loyality and worst of all, it’s probably the right thing to do, but it’s not the kind of spirit that won us The Battle of Britian is it? Indesign with all its slick features and stable work flow systems is the chisel-jawed college jock that everyone loves. Quark is that scrawny kid who keeps deleting all your work halfway through a project, but that petulant child has been with me since the start, and at times a loyal servant. The best thing I can say about Quark is that it’s taught me the importance of regular saving, but I’ll also say this - the few surviving people using it are like Thatch Roofers, we’ve got a vintage skill that’s a dying art. When everyone is a designer (I predict around 2010) we’ll be a small pocket of bandits who do things from the heart the hard way. I’m never changing on this, Quark you are a brother. |
